System Beta, a collaboration between Jason Mortara and Chad Stayrook, is an evolving, dynamic system within the gallery space. Once the materials and tools are brought into the gallery, nothing will be taken into or out of the space. Each night a coin toss will determine if the objective is build or unbuild. When the objective is build, the artists will use the materials in the room to construct and assemble. When the objective is unbuild the artists will dismantle and reduce. The artists will be challenging themselves to consistently rework the materials at hand in new ways, creating complex subsystems which, having developed over the course of a few days, will then be taken apart and restructured into new subsystems. Due to the chance of the coin toss, several nights of progressive building or unbuilding may occur, resulting in stages that are quite elaborate—or quite disparate—for the public to experience. Therefore, viewers are encouraged to return throughout the week to see the progress.
